Ashburton

Ashburton is a relatively small offshore investment manager based in the Channel Islands with ₤108bn in assets under management. It is wholly owned by the Firstrand group and as such forms part of the FirstRand International Wealth Management Holdings Limited .
With its headquarters in Jersey, Channel Islands, Ashburton has been in business for some twenty five years and is a distinctive, niche investment manager, which is known for its nimble investment strategy decisions as well as its annual visits to South Africa where clients are able to meet with the fund managers handling their offshore wealth.
Ashburton offers a focused range of funds which give the investor exposure to various geographic regions and asset classes as well as to a core asset allocation service which aims to produce long term capital growth while keeping volatility to a minimum.
The in-house research team is used to provide most of the information required for decision making while attention is often paid to global sentiment when asset allocation is decided.
 

Aviva

Morley is a London-based asset management business wholly owned by Aviva plc, the group which owns Norwich Union and one of the world's largest financial services groups. Morley is in turn one of the UK’s largest active fund managers. In Europe, it is one of the biggest property investment managers with £31billion / €46billion of property assets under management. Morley group companies have assets of £165.88 billion / €244.85 billion under management.
Morley manage assets in a broad range of classes.  Their relationship with their parent company, Aviva, has provided them with a platform to be able to develop their investment skills.
As well as investing across the more traditional range of assets, they investigate specialised areas of the market such as convertible bonds and uncover new and innovative investment opportunities such as in Eastern Europe.
The result is a broad range of investment offerings, from multiple cash products through to alternatives such as hedge funds and private equity.

 

Coronation

Coronation International is a London based Fund of funds manager that selects and blends global investment managers to form building blocks in their offshore long only and hedge fund range which are authorised in Ireland and the Cayman Islands.

Established in 1996 under the leadership of Tony Gibson, the team comprises Tony and Ken Lewis in London and Louis Stassen, Charles De Kock, Gavin Joubert & Karl Leinberger in Cape Town.

The Coronation group now manages R120 billion in assets including a strategic partnership with Namibia Asset Management.

 

Fairbairn Trust Company (FTC)

Fairbairn Trust Company specialises in the provision of offshore trust & company services aimed at protecting the wealth of offshore investors.  FTC is the offshore fiduciary arm of the Old Mutual Group and is based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

 

Franklin Templeton

Franklin Templeton established its South African office, registered as Templeton Asset Management Limited, in 1995. Templeton Asset Management Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Franklin Resources, Inc.,  a global investment organization operating as Franklin Templeton Investments. Franklin Templeton Investments offers investment choices under the Franklin, Templeton and Mutual Series names and manages US$617.9 billion in assets (as of August 31, 2007) composed of mutual funds and other investment vehicles for individuals, institutions, pension plans, trust and partnerships in 150 countries. The San Mateo, California-based company has 60 years of investment experience.
Franklin Templeton offers a wide range of FSB registered offshore investment funds as well as specialized investment management services to retail and institutional investors in South Africa.
 

Glacier International

Glacier, a specialised investment services arm within the greater Sanlam group, was established in 2006 in order to compete with the independent investment firms such as Investec, Coronation and Allan Gray.

Glacier’s offerings include a fund of funds operation, a LISP platform as well as the provision of wills, trusts and estate planning services.  The LISP provides access to a wide range of unit trust funds managed by various asset managers for both discretionary and compulsory monies as well as access to share portfolios through various stockbrokers.  Glacier International, its locally based offshore investment distribution company, offers a locally registered international endowment platform which provides access to a range of offshore funds managed by various international management firms within a tax-efficient life wrapper.  It also provides access to Sanlam Investment Management’s own range of offshore funds managed by by Kokkie Kooyman and his team in Cape Town.

 

Invesco

INVESCO (formerly Invesco Perpetual) is part of Invesco Plc, one of the world's largest independent global investment managers. As a member of Invesco Plc, INVESCO benefits from its worldwide network of experienced professionals based around the world. INVESCO manages offshore funds domiciled in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey totaling in excess of ₤400bn in assets under management. 

The INVESCO International Development Division is responsible for the marketing and selling of the INVESCO offshore product range in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Ireland, Bermuda and the Caribbean, Mediterranean countries (e.g. Malta, Cyprus, Gibraltar), as well as the Middle East and Africa.

 

Investec

Investec Asset Management is a medium sized investment manager, providing an innovative and extensive range of financial and banking products to institutional and individual investors.

Established in Cape Town in 1991, the firm has been built from start-up into an international business managing in excess of US $60bn on behalf of third party clients.

With the acquisition of Guinness Flight in 1998 Investec have grown from domestic roots in the UK and South Africa to a position where they now serve a growing international client base from the Americas, Europe, Asia the Middle East and Africa. They employ 100 investment professionals.

The equity analysis philosophy at Investec is built around its four factor approach.  When seeking new investment opportunities in companies, Investec looks at these four factors: Strategy, Valuation, Dynamics & Technicals. 

 

LloydsTSB

LloydsTSB Offshore is the offshore arm of the large UK based LloydsTSB group.  Its head office is in Jersey in the Channel Islands. 

The management of its offshore funds is outsourced to Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP), the UK based asset manager with ₤97.6bn under management. 

SWIP was created in 2000 when Hill Samuel Asset Management merged with Scottish Widows Investment Management.

 

Nedgroup Investments (IOM) Ltd

Nedgroup Investments (IOM) Limited (alongside Nedgroup Investment Advisers (UK) Limited) is a niche manager offering a range of risk-controlled investment management solutions.

The core business of Nedgroup Investments is to afford private and institutional investors access to a focused range of fund of fund investment solutions using a proven multi-manager process.

Through this process, Nedgroup Investments selects and blends a suitable mix of the world`s asset managers and funds to create portfolios that attempt to match the specific investment objectives and risk profiles of various investor categories.

Old Mutual International

Old Mutual International (OMI) is a large offshore retail financial services group, dedicated to providing offshore life assurance and investment products to clients globally.

 It is part of the Old Mutual Group which now manages £263 billion (as of 30.06.07) in assets on behalf of its global client-base.

OMI offers access to major offshore markets through an extensive range of funds that includes managed solutions across different asset classes as well as single asset class and specialist funds. Orbis

Orbis is the Bermuda & London based offshore arm of Allan Gray.  It was established in London in 1988 by Allan Gray and his son William.  Orbis now manages over US$19bn in assets.  Orbis provides investment management services to institutions and individuals through the Orbis mutual funds.

They are deep value managers who use their own research to select equities that are priced significantly below an assessment of their intrinsic value. They believe that a focused portfolio of such equities will deliver superior long-term returns at less risk of loss than the average equity portfolio.

Sarasin

Sarasin London is a London-based specialist investment management firm that is 75% owned by Bank Sarasin & Co Limited, a leading Swiss private bank and 25% owned by its professional staff. The firm employs over 100 people and manages approximately £6.75 billion.

Sarasin aim to provide an unusual combination of successful investment performance , using its well known thematic approach, as well as high service standards.

Founded in 1841, Bank Sarasin is today one of Switzerland’s leading private banking institutions.

The Sarasin Group - headquartered in Basel, Switzerland – is represented in Geneva, Lugano and Zurich as well as in Dubai, Guernsey, Hong Kong, London, Munich, Paris and Singapore. Its major shareholder is Rabobank.

 

Stanlib Offshore 

Stanlib, is the result of the 2002 merger between Liberty Asset Management & Standard Corporate & Merchant Bank.

Stanlib Offshore offers the South African investor the opportunity to invest in a selection of offshore funds managed by the large US based Fidelity Asset Management, the largest offshore asset manager in the world.

These funds are accessed by investing in direct Stanlib Offshore funds (mirror funds of their Fidelity counterparts) as well as via three managed portfolios which are, in effect, risk profiled combinations of selected Fidelity funds.      

 

Standard Bank Offshore Services

Standard Bank Offshore is a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Bank Group Limited.

Standard Bank Offshore comprises a number of companies located in the offshore jurisdictions of Jersey, the Isle of Man and Mauritius.

They provide a range of offshore services for the personal, professional and corporate client, including banking, fiduciary and corporate services, stockbroking, asset management, and offshore fund management.

 

Trident Trust Company (Guernsey) Limited

Trident Trust is a medium sized independent international corporate, fiduciary and fund administrator.  With its head office in Guernsey, it also has client liaison offices in Dubai, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the UK and the US.

Trident’s core focus is the administration of international entities such as offshore trusts & companies.

 

South African PROVIDERS

 

Allan Gray

Established in 1974, Allan Gray Limited is the largest privately owned investment management firm in Southern Africa. Its clients comprise institutional investors, principally retirement funds, medical aid schemes and endowments, and individuals. Clients invest through either segregated accounts or collective investment funds.
The Head Office is in Cape Town and is staffed by over 500 people. Allan Gray also has an office in Johannesburg; Gaborone, Botswana and Windhoek, Namibia. Allan Gray's global asset management partner, the Bermuda based Orbis Group, manages a range of offshore equity mutual funds. The two groups share a common founder in Allan W B Gray and share the same ethos and value-based investment approach. The investment research efforts are also integrated so as to enhance the global investment management capabilities of the two firms.

Coronation Fund Managers

Coronation Fund Managers is one of the larger asset management companies in South Africa.

They manage funds in excess of R120 billion, and have offices in South Africa, Botswana, Ireland and the United Kingdom. They also have a presence in Namibia through their shareholding and strategic partnership with Namibia Asset Management.

Coronation specialises in stockpicking and the company prides itself on its independence of thought as well as its ability to rely on its own research rather than bought in research.  Entrepreneurial flair is sought after and encouraged amongst its investment professionals. 

Since 2001 their unit trust company has ranked in the top two positions of the Raging Bull Award for 'Best Unit Trust Company in South Africa'.

 

Discovery Invest & Discovery Life

Discovery Life

Discovery Life, a new and very innovative addition to the growing number of Life offices in South Africa was also the first South African insurer to separate risk from investment.  Their innovative approach to life insurance has led to Discovery taking a 40% share of the new business in the independent broker risk market since starting the company in 2000.

Discovery also won the SAFSIA 2007 award for the “Long-term insurer of the year in risk products” category and they were also voted the top risk and life assurance supplier at the 2008 Financial Intermediaries’ Association Awards. 

 

Discovery Invest

Discovery Invest was launched in 2007 to offer consumers a unique and comprehensive product range to  address the existing gaps in the market which they identified at the time.  Discovery achieves this by offering access to excellent fund managers at affordable rates and also by offering enhanced returns to investors by linking investment products to their Vitality and Healthy Foods programmes.  Discovery also offers a range of guaranteed investment products.

Marriott

Marriott is a specialist in the provision of income, especially for the retired investor.

Their main focus is the provision of a predictable, and where possible, increasing revenue stream which is not dependent on the level of local interest rates, into perpetuity.

The products provided by Marriott are designed in such a way as to provide a reliable and predictable income for the retired investor without ever eroding the capital base. A portion of the income is always reinvested to ensure an expanding capital base and, with it, income growth.

 

Nedgroup Investments

Nedgroup Investments is a unique investment company within the Nedbank Group. As one of the larger unit trust managers in South Africa, they offer a comprehensive range of local and international investment solutions.

Stanlib

Stanlib, is the result of the 2002 merger between Liberty Asset Management & Standard Corporate & Merchant Bank. Ownership of STANLIB is held by Liberty Life, who in turn has an ownership structure including the Standard Bank Group as well as a diversified spread of BEE organizations dedicated to the advancement of the previously disadvantaged.
Today STANLIB manages over R314 (31/03/2007) billion in assets, making it the 3rd largest manager of investments in South Africa. 

Its products consist of a full range of collective investment schemes (unit trusts) and a LISP platform.
